Introduction: Tobacco use is considered as an important general health problem and it is known as one of the preventable causes of morbidity and mortality. The goal of this survey was to determine the cigarette and hookah using model in over-15 population residing in Bandar Abbas.
Methods: In this population-based study, a total number of 1810 over-15 residents of Bandar Abbas were selected using clustered sampling. Entrants were interviewed in a face-to-face manner by which demographic data and cigarette or hookah using status were recorded. Data was analyzed by SPSS software.
Results: Frequency of cigarette smoking was 11.7% in the participants. 22.7% of men and 0.9% of women, which the difference was statistically significant (P<0.0001). prevalence of hookah smoking was 9.1% in the participants. 4.6% of men and 13.6% of women had smoked hookah which denotes a statistically significant difference (P<0.0001). Cigarette and hookah using was meaningfully correlated with age and education (P<0.0001).
Conclusion: Cigarette using model is concordant with most of similar surveys in our studied population but hookah using is considerably higher than other parts of the country. So it is recommended to conduct more studies regarding this issue to determine possible causes of having penchant for hookah smoking in the population (especially women).
